Leigh Stuart

Leigh Stuart, 64, owns Leigh Stuart Stables in Bowling Green, Kentucky, where she trains both horses and riders for competition. Horses have been a part of her life since the very beginning; her parents owned a horse farm, and she recalls photos of herself riding horses while still in diapers. Stuart has run her business and supported herself independently for her entire adult life, building a career rooted in dedication and passion.

Her love for the work fuels long, demanding days that can sometimes stretch up to 18-20 hours. A typical day begins early with feeding the horses, followed by hours of training riders and horses, cleaning stalls, and managing the daily responsibilities of a farm. Since she was 12 years old, Stuart has known that this is her calling.

After more than four decades in the industry, it is the growth of her riders that continues to motivate her. Watching them build confidence and succeed brings her the greatest fulfillment. "My gift is with the horses, but the horses are just a tool for the kids," Stuart said. "I get to influence a lot of lives, and I love it. Their whole world is just transformed - it changes everything for the rest of their lives."

What does strength look like for you now compared to when you were younger?

"When I was young, everything was about the number of blue ribbons and success. As much as I still love to win, that has less correlation for strength to me now. Now, strength is being a single woman at 64 in a male dominated industry, holding my own. That's what strength is to me now."
